MegaUpload Shuts Down and Seized by Feds

The Department of Justice announced Thursday that it has conducted a major action to shut down MegaUpload, a popular file-sharing site widely used for free downloads of movies and television shows.

After receiving indictments from a grand jury in Virginia for racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and other charges on Jan. 5, federal authorities on Thursday arrested four people and executed more than 20 search warrants in the U.S. and eight foreign countries, seizing 18 domain names and an estimated $50 million in assets, including servers run in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Yeah, there were two threads about this yesterday on here in the lounge somewhere. It seems that there is no need for SOPA if the government can do this anyway.

I guess so. File hosters had already made sample on what happened to MU. Most of them are taking measures to prevent this from happening to them, like removal of affiliate feature and file sharing...

This is not the effect of SOPA. Remember, SOPA is still a bill when the Feds raided MegaUpload.

You mean sopa bill wasn't passed and still they raided megaupload ?
And what could be the possible reason for raiding and shutting it down ?

Shutting down MegaUpload is really shocking but I download everything from torrentz. Still mediafire is doing good.

Have you been reading the reports? Yeah it's true.
MegaUpload was raided by the FBI due to multiple copyright infringement reports.
