Have been using GIMP and inkscape. it has always been a good combination of software to use for any graphic works and even designing sites.

Photoshop CS4 Extended for me. I've been using it for years already, and it's quite user friendly. Done lots of artwork with it.

you can use these 3 free software Inkscape(for vector graphics),GIMP(for raster graphics),Blender(for 3D).
