What is link Popularity?

Link popularity is a general representation of the total number of web pages which link to a website (or individual web page). Most of the major search engines support the "link:" operator. Type in “link:” (without the quotation marks) in front of the URL about which you want to learn.

A link is a citation or +1 vote for your website.

With above information i would like to add that "More quality inbound links will improve your page rank".

Did not find any links for a particular site i was searching using link: but tried links: instead and found many mentions of the same site.

How is Link popularity useful?

Link popularity is the counting of number of links to your site and from your site on the World Wide Web. There are two types of counting. The first one is internal and second one is external counting. Mostly search engines give exposure to your site according to your link popularity.

Is there a tool to see your (or other's) sites link popularity? I think Open Site Explorer could do, but not very accurate...
