Getting your Users to build links for you
What are some methods I can employ to get my community/users to build backlinks for me? Of course I have the social networking icons around my content but they rarely ever get clicked.
Are there any other methods to encourage or get users to build backlinks for me?

Give them something to link. If you put a piece of content on your site that people would likely want to show their friends or family, a lot of people would probably copy and paste the link onto several social networking sites for thier peers to see.

This will work only if they really find your content important, funny, interesting or whatever.
So you must have very high quality content.Buy: | Yahoo Answers | Forum Posting | Blog Commenting | Twitter Followers | Facebook Likes |

You really want to have good content which releates to them in the hope that they'll link to your website, websites with a lot of good content, such as wikipedia get thousands of backlinks built to their pages every day, which is how they dominate the SERPs and won't be moving off them any time soon.

Run a contest that requires a contestant to 'tweet' about your site/content, post to Facebook and leave a comment on your blog. I've seen this done on numerous blogs. You can even get a contest sponsor so the contest doesn't cost you anything.

If you have viral content on your website you can expect the readers to share the link on other websites. Thus write on an issue that can be useful for many people.

Ask your readers to tweet about what you've just written. Sometimes just asking is all it takes. Do that often, repeatedly if you need. Post about it in your blog side bar as a reminder.
