Is it hard to get wikipedia.org backlinks?

Yes... Well, no, it is easy to edit an article and get it but then they just about always get removed.

I've been down this route as well - still didn't stick (or rather, it did stick for about 1-2 months which is much longer than anything else I've tried).

It's easy to get a link there, not so easy to keep one

Following two things are required for this:

First you have to build your credibility as wikipedia author

You should link only relevant and established sites

Remember self promotion is not allowed.

I'm guessing this is so that fly by night sites are not used to establish the facts in the wiki? That would tend to discredit wiki in general.
